How to Winterize a Pool

Outdoor pools are not open all year. Now that winter is here, owners and operators of in ground outdoor pools should begin “winterizing” their pools.

How to Winterize Your Swimming Pool

Chicago’s outdoor swimming pools close at the end of summer and reopen the following spring. Winterizing your pool in northern climates is crucial to ensure it’s usable come spring.

Prepare your pool for winter with this checklist:

  1. Test the Water: After a long summer of heavy usage, a pool’s chemistry could be out of balance. When preparing a swimming pool for winter, balance the pH and total acids. The pH should be between 7.2 and 7.3 (check with your pool installer for the ideal pH for your pool).
  2. Clean the Pool Thoroughly: Remove all debris, such as leaves, sticks, and rocks. Vacuum and brush your filters. Make sure the filters are clean and there aren’t any unsightly stains in the water. Inspect for leaks during this process.
  3. Shock the Pool: Add chlorine or other chemicals to raise the “free chlorine” level until bacteria and contaminants like algae cannot survive. Most winter pool chemical kits recommend a level between 2 and 3 ppm, but it’s best to consult with your pool installer.
  4. Remove Objects: Remove any objects used in or around the pool, such as ladders and lights. Plug the return jet to prevent damage when the water freezes in winter. Consider repairing pool equipment and preparing plumbing pipes.
  5. Install the Winter Cover: Center the cover and make sure it is securely fastened. Talk to your pool builder for the best cover options.

Following these steps will help ensure your pool is ready for use when the warmer weather returns.
